There are three classes of bloons in the game: regular (unnamed in the game), MOAB-class and Boss-class. The bloons always follow the map's set path on the track until they either reach the exit(s), are popped, or are moved to an earlier part of the track by a tower's ability. If a bloon reaches the end of a path, the player loses lives (or in later games, health) once these are all depleted, the game ends. The game is a tower defense game and thus the player can choose various types of towers and traps to place around the track in order to defend against the bloons, gaining 1 in-game dollar for every layer of bloon popped. The main objective of Bloons TD is to prevent Bloons (in-game name for balloons) from reaching the end of a defined track on a map that consists of one or more entrances and exits for the bloons. Money is gained by popping bloons, completing rounds, and collecting bananas from existing banana farms which can be spent on new towers, upgrades for existing ones, or temporary items such as exploding pineapples and road spikes. A handful of towers can stall the bloons and give the other towers more time to pop them by freezing and gluing the bloons. In the game, players attempt to prevent Bloons (the in-game name for balloons) from reaching the end of a set course by placing towers or road items along it that can pop the bloons in a variety of ways, typically by using the power of monkeys.

The first player should avoid sending an attack at this time, as the other player will have the funds needed to upgrade their defense. The second player will either have to send their attack into upgraded defenses or invest into their income later than they would like, putting them behind the curve. If the other player seems to be saving cash in Bloons TD Battles 2, the first player should prepare their defenses or at least save as much as the other player is. If the other player is too greedy, a well-timed rush might just end their game right away. Matching greed will force the game to go later, which might benefit a particular strategy.

Examples of common threats include camo-lead bloons and camo-purple bloons on wave 12, grouped regen-ceramic bloons on wave 16, and DDTs on wave 26. Bloons and their upgrades unlock on specific rounds, so players should keep these rounds in mind and ensure that their defenses are prepared for new threats while increasing their income during safe rounds. In general, the bloons that attack by default aren't very threatening, so players should ensure that their defense can handle anything the opponent could send at that moment before trying to prioritize more income. It's generally best to stick to one source of income and play to its strengths, and only switch if necessary. While it's perfectly viable to generate income from multiple sources in Bloons TD Battles 2, this also opens players up to the vulnerabilities associated with both forms of income and often means players are overspending on their eco. Decide on a main source of income, and stick to it. This game is competitive, and thus exact strategies won't always work due to matchups and skill, but here are some guidelines for keeping ahead on the monetary metagame.
